History vs. fiction
King Zhao of Qin cunningly seized the Western Zhou and Chu
The Records of the Grand Historian, 'Basic Annals of Zhou', Part 2, emphasizes his military conquest: 'King Zhao of Qin, enraged, sent General Jiu to attack Western Zhou.' In contrast, the Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, Chapter 92, adds the plot to deceive the King of Chu, depicting his cunning: 'King Zhao of Qin sent his younger brother, Lord Jingyang, named Kui, riding in the king's chariot with feather banners and full retinue, pretending to be the King of Qin, stationed at Wuguan; he sent General Bai Qi with ten thousand troops to ambush inside the pass to seize the King of Chu; he sent General Meng Ao with ten thousand troops to ambush outside the pass to guard against emergencies.'
