History vs. fiction
A general who was seen as capricious in official histories, defecting to Wei and then planning to return to Shu Han.
The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Shu, Biography of Liu Feng records that Guan Yu sent a letter requesting aid, but Meng Da and Liu Feng refused to send troops on the grounds that the mountain commandery had just submitted, and later, fearing punishment, surrendered to Wei. The original text: 「封、达辞以山郡初附，未可动摇，不承羽命。」(Source: Book of Shu, Biographies of Liu, Peng, Liao, Li, Liu, Wei, and Yang.txt)
The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Chronicle of Emperor Ming and the Book of Jin record that Meng Da intended to rebel against Wei with Xincheng and return to Shu, and Sima Yi, taking him by surprise, marched rapidly for eight days and besieged and executed him. The existing local official history corpus contains: "新城太守孟达反，诏骠骑将军司马宣王讨之。" (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Chronicle of Emperor Ming)
