In fiction · Investiture of the Gods
Originally the commander of Sanshan Pass in the Shang Dynasty, he was ordered to attack Xiqi. Because his daughter Deng Chanyu married Tu Xingsun, he surrendered to the Zhou Dynasty. He followed Jiang Ziya on the eastern campaign and killed many enemy generals, but was later captured and killed by Chen Qi in Xiqi.
History vs. fiction
Fictional Commander-in-Chief of Sanshan Pass in the Shang Dynasty
《封神演义》卷040载：“看三山关邓九公报：‘大败南伯侯。’” In depicting the border defense of the Shang Dynasty, the novel sets up passes such as “三山关” and “游魂关”, and appoints Deng Jiugong as the “总兵” of “三山关”. In reality, the position of “总兵” was a senior local military officer title that only began in the Ming Dynasty, and such an official system did not exist in the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties. Moreover, the wars among feudal lords during the Yin-Shang period had not yet developed the solid pass defense system depicted in the novel. The Records of the Grand Historian contains no record of Deng Jiugong; he is entirely a fictional general created by the novelist based on the Ming Dynasty's institutional framework and border impressions.
