History vs. fiction
Xi Rui is recorded in both books as a close confidant and important minister of Duke Hui of Jin, and was executed after Duke Wen of Jin ascended the throne for plotting rebellion.
The Records of the Grand Historian, 'The Hereditary House of Jin', records that after Duke Wen of Jin ascended the throne: 'Lü and Xi indeed rebelled, set fire to the duke's palace, but did not find Duke Wen. ... Duke Mu of Qin lured Lü and Xi and killed them by the river.' The Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, Chapter 36, also writes that the two attempted to burn the palace and assassinate Chong'er but failed, and were lured by Duke Mu of Qin and Gongsun Zhi to Wangcheng and executed: 'Duke Wen cursed loudly: "Rebellious thieves! What have I done to you that you rebel? ..." He ordered the warriors to seize them, and commanded Bo Ti to supervise the execution. In a moment, two heads were presented below the steps.'
