History vs. fiction
Li Ke's deeds in the Records of the Grand Historian and the Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms are basically consistent, mainly involving his participation in the power struggle of the Jin state and his eventual forced suicide.
The Records of the Grand Historian, 'The Hereditary House of Jin', records: 'Li Ke and others had already killed Xi Qi and Zhuozi, and sent someone to welcome Chong'er in Di, intending to make him ruler. ... Yiwu said: 'If I am indeed established, I will cede the eight cities west of the Yellow River to Qin.' When he arrived and was established, he sent Pi Zheng to thank Qin, but reneged on the agreement and did not cede the western cities, and killed Li Ke.' The Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, Chapter 29, describes in detail the circumstances of his forced suicide: 'Ke then drew his sword, leaped to the ground, and cried out: 'Heaven! What injustice! Loyal but punished, if the dead have knowledge, how can I face Xun Xi in the underworld?' Then he cut his own throat and died.' Both records reflect the historical fact that he died due to regicide and failure in political struggle.
