History vs. fiction
Ma Zhong of Eastern Wu and Ma Zhong of Shu Han were different people with the same name. This page covers only Pan Zhang's subordinate, who helped capture Guan Yu.
The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biography of Pan Zhang records that Ma Zhong, a subordinate of Pan Zhang, captured Guan Yu at Linju; the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Shu, Biography of the Later Lord also records that General Ma Zhong pacified the rebellion of Liu Zhou. These two records refer to two different generals with the same name, and the genealogy has been split into separate figures. The original text of the latter is: "是岁，南夷刘胄反，将军马忠破平之。"（《三国志·蜀书·后主传》）
