History vs. fiction
The killing of Zhang Liao by shooting is fictional
In official history, Zhang Liao "fell critically ill and died in Jiangdu" (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Biographies of Zhang, Yue, Yu, and Zhang Xu), and was not shot and killed by Ding Feng on the battlefield. In official history, Ding Feng in his early years "was a minor general due to his bravery, serving under Gan Ning, Lu Xun, Pan Zhang, etc." (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biographies of Cheng, Huang, Han, Jiang, Zhou, Chen, Dong, Gan, Ling, Xu, Pan, Ding), and only became a core general in the late Eastern Wu period; there is no record of him shooting Zhang Liao in the entire book. Chapter 86 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms fictionalizes the plot of him shooting Zhang Liao, which is artistic embellishment.
