Governor of Guangling, enemy of Sun Ce. Governor of Guangling, internal agent for Cao Cao, helped defeat Lü Bu. Had heroic spirit and noble integrity, died early.
In fiction · Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chen Deng, a native of Guangling, initially served as a staff officer in Xuzhou, later assisted Liu Bei. When Lü Bu occupied Xuzhou, Chen Deng served as an envoy, secretly acting as an internal agent for Cao Cao, and was appointed Governor of Guangling. His father Chen Gui, father and son plotted to assist Liu Bei, offered strategies to defeat Yuan Shu, and persuaded Han Xian and Yang Feng to surrender. Later, as an internal agent for Cao Cao, he helped defeat Lü Bu and was made General of the Waves (Fubo General) for his merits.

Chapter 12 of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms emphasizes his role as a staff member in Xuzhou: 'Suddenly fell ill, and seeing that his condition was grave, he invited Mi Zhu and Chen Deng to discuss affairs.' The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Shu, Biography of the Former Lord records his direct persuasion of Liu Bei: 'Chen Deng of Xiapi said to the Former Lord: "Now the Han dynasty is declining, and the realm is overturned. Establishing merit and undertaking great deeds lies in this very day."
