In fiction · Investiture of the Gods
Chijingzi is one of the Twelve Golden Immortals of the Chan Sect, with his dojo at Yunxiao Cave on Taihua Mountain. He once saved Jiang Ziya's soul and entered the Soul-Destroying Formation twice to kill Yao Tianjun. He accepted Yin Hong as his disciple and gave him treasures to send him down the mountain. Later, because Yin Hong aided the tyrant Zhou, he sadly used the Taiji Diagram to destroy him. When breaking the formation, he took the Immortal-Slaying Sword, and once broke the Taiji Formation but was knocked down by Wuyunxian.
History vs. fiction
Appropriation of Immortal Names and Taoist Figures
Chapter 061 of "Investiture of the Gods" records: 「赤精子含悲忍泪，只得将太极图一抖，卷在一处；拎著半晌，复一抖，太极图开了，一阵风，殷洪连人带马，化作飞灰去。」 The novel sets Chi Jingzi as one of the Twelve Golden Immortals of the Chan sect at Yunxiao Cave on Taihua Mountain, and as Yin Hong's master. In reality, the name "Chi Jingzi" first appears in Daoist hagiographies from the Wei and Jin periods (such as "Liexian Zhuan" and "Baopuzi"), where he is revered as an ancient immortal who attained the Dao, with some traditions even claiming he was an immortal from the era of Zhuanxu. The novel directly appropriates this Daoist immortal's name, placing him in the Shang-Zhou conflict and fabricating episodes of taking disciples and breaking formations, all without any basis in official history.
