In fiction · Investiture of the Gods
Leader of the Jie Sect, with many disciples. Due to instigation by his followers, he became hostile to the Chan Sect. He personally set up the Immortal Killing Formation and the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation, but was defeated by the combined efforts of the Four Sages, including Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun, and was later punished by Hongjun Daoren.
History vs. fiction
The leader of the Jie Sect and the conflict among the Three Teachings
The novel 'Investiture of the Gods' originally created the image of Tongtian Jiaozhu as the commander of the Jie Sect, and had him together with Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun form the grand pattern of 'the Three Teachings jointly establishing the List of the Gods'. Tongtian Jiaozhu advocated 'education without discrimination', and many of his followers were animals and birds that had attained the Way, reflecting the exploration of different cultivation philosophies in Ming dynasty novels. In the 'Records of the Grand Historian', the transition from Shang to Zhou is purely a matter of human rise and fall, with no conflict between the Chan and Jie sects. The great battle of Tongtian Jiaozhu and the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation is a fictional design of the novel, not historical fact.
