History vs. fiction
In official histories, he is a strict and imposing Wei imperial clansman renowned for his great wisdom and valor, while in novels he often serves as a backdrop for Guan Yu and Zhuge Liang.
According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Wei Shu, Biography of Cao Ren, he personally led dozens of cavalry to break through Wu's encirclement at Jiangling and rescued his subordinate Niu Jin. Chen Jiao praised him, saying, 'The general is truly a heavenly being.'
