History vs. fiction
In official history, he was the third Celestial Master of the Way of the Five Pecks of Rice and the leader of a separatist regime in Hanzhong.
The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Biography of Zhang Lu records that Zhang Lu propagated the Way of the Five Pecks of Rice in Hanzhong, set up charity lodges with free rice and meat, and protected the region and its people for over thirty years. The original text says, 「张鲁据汉中，三月，遣锺繇讨之。」 (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Annals of Emperor Wu).
The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Wei Book, Biography of Zhang Lu records that when faced with Liu Bei and Cao Cao, he said, 'I would rather be Cao Cao's slave than Liu Bei's guest,' and then surrendered to Cao Cao and was enfeoffed.
