History vs. fiction
Persuading Sun Hao not to commit suicide and suggesting surrender
- based on factWhen Sun Hao was about to commit suicide, he was persuaded to follow Liu Shan's example and surrender.
The official history Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biography of the Later Sovereign records that when the Jin army approached, 'Hao, following the plan of Guanglu Xun Xue Ying and Zhongshu Ling Hu Chong, sent envoys with letters to Jun, Zhou, and Hun,' without mentioning Sun Hao's suicide. In the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 120, when the Jin soldiers entered the city, 'Sun Hao, hearing that the Jin soldiers had entered the city, wanted to commit suicide,' and Xue Ying memorialized: 'Your Majesty, why not follow the example of Duke Anle Liu Shan?' This is a fictionalized detail in the novel.
