A minister of the state of Wu, he successively held the posts of Chief Clerk of the Palace Secretariat and Junior Tutor of the Crown Prince, and was talented in literature.

However, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 38, lists him among several renowned scholars who defected to Jiangdong, saying: 'Xue Zong of Pei County, courtesy name Jingwen... These several men all came to Jiangdong. Sun Quan treated them with great respect and generosity.'
