History vs. fiction
Regarding the location of Xi Ke's injury, the Records of the Grand Historian only says that he was shot and wounded, while the novel clearly states that he was wounded in the left ribs.
- based on factWhat injury did Xi Ke suffer in battle?
The Records of the Grand Historian, 'Hereditary House of Qi Tai Gong,' records: 'He shot and wounded Xi Ke, blood flowed to his shoes. Ke wanted to return to the rampart, but his charioteer said, "When I first entered, I was wounded twice, but I did not dare to speak of my pain, fearing the soldiers. I hope you will endure it." So they fought again.' However, the Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, chapter 56, clearly states that he was wounded in the left ribs: 'Xi Ke was just beating the drum to advance the troops when he was also struck by an arrow in the left ribs, blood spattered to his shoes, and the drumbeat slowed. Xie Zhang said, "The eyes and ears of the army are in the flag and drum of the central army; the three armies advance and retreat based on them. The wound is not fatal; you must strive to fight!" Xi Ke then seized the drumstick and struck continuously.'
