In fiction · Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Wang Ping was originally a Wei general who accompanied Xu Huang on campaigns. Because his advice was not heeded, he crossed the Han River and defected to Liu Bei, and was appointed as a Partial General. Thereafter, he followed Zhuge Liang on southern and northern campaigns, participating in battles such as capturing Meng Huo and capturing Xiahou Mao alive. During the Battle of Jieting, he advised Ma Su but was ignored, so he led his own troops to set up camp, later rescued Zhang Ni, and defended the small path at Jieting. During the Northern Expeditions, he repeatedly received plans to raid grain supplies, captured Yinping, and ambushed Wei forces with Zhang Yi.

History vs. fiction
Wang Ping held Xingshi against Cao Shuang in the history; the novel omits the battle entirely.
Sanguozhi (Shu, biographies of Jiang Wan, Fei Yi and Jiang Wei) records Wang Ping holding Xingshi with banners strung out over a hundred li: 「遂帅所领与平据兴势，多张旗帜，弥亘百馀里。」 The episode is central to his career, yet Romance of the Three Kingdoms leaves it out altogether.
