In history · Records of the Three Kingdoms
An official of Shu Han, reaching the position of Attendant, later killed during the eastern campaign against Wu. Also known as Ma Jichang in eulogies. A native of Donghai, he submitted to Song.
In fiction · Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Ma Liang was a worthy scholar of Jingxiang. He once proposed the strategy to capture the four commanderies, and later served as a military advisor in charge of documents. When Guan Yu was on the northern expedition, Ma Liang played chess with him and witnessed the treatment of his wound. After the loss of Jingzhou, Ma Liang reported the military situation to Liu Bei. When Liu Bei attacked Wu, Ma Liang admonished him and sent maps to Zhuge Liang, conveying his words to Liu Bei.
