History vs. fiction
In official history, he was a feudal lord of the Chong state and a supporter of King Zhou of Shang, but in the novel, he is depicted as a tyrant who aided the wicked and built the Deer Terrace to oppress the people.
According to the 'Records of the Grand Historian: Annals of Zhou', 'Chong Hou Hu slandered the Earl of the West to King Zhou of Shang, saying: The Earl of the West has accumulated virtue and done good deeds, and all the feudal lords are turning to him. This will be detrimental to Your Majesty. So the king imprisoned the Earl of the West at Youli.'
In official history, the Deer Terrace was built by King Zhou himself. Neither the 'Book of Documents' nor the 'Records of the Grand Historian' records that Chong Hou Hu oversaw its construction or designed cruel punishments.
