History vs. fiction
Replacing Lian Po with Zhao Kuo is real history
The Records of the Grand Historian, Biography of Lian Po and Lin Xiangru, records that during the Battle of Changping, the Qin army used a divisive scheme, saying they feared Zhao Kuo as general, 'The King of Zhao then made Zhao Kuo general, replacing Lian Po... After Zhao Kuo replaced Lian Po, he changed all the regulations and replaced the military officers,' ultimately leading to 'Zhao Kuo's army was defeated, and hundreds of thousands of troops surrendered to Qin, and Qin buried them all.' The Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, Chapter 98, also describes in detail the historical fact that King Xiaocheng of Zhao, heeding slander and disregarding the objections of Lin Xiangru and Zhao Kuo's mother, forcibly replaced Lian Po with Zhao Kuo, leading to the disastrous defeat at Changping. The two books record essentially the same.
