Discrepancy in the number of rebels recorded in the incident of suppressing the Xiaojie mutiny in Beizhou involving Wang Sizong
In the History of Song, in the biographies of Yang Li, Song Shi, Wang Sizong, etc., it is recorded that when Wang Sizong was transferred to Hebei, 'the Xiaojie soldiers in Beizhou, more than fifty in number, plotted to secretly rise up; Sizong led his officials to capture them all, and received a special edict of commendation.' However, in the biography of Zhou Shenyu in the History of Song, in the biographies of Shangguan Zheng, Lu Bin, Zhou Shenyu, etc., it is recorded in detail that during the Chunhua period, when Zhou Shenyu was the prefect of Beizhou, 'there were thirty-seven Xiaojie soldiers stationed in the prefecture who conspired to kill Shenyu, seize the arsenal, and rebel... Shenyu became aware of it and, together with the transport commissioner Wang Sizong, led troops to capture all their accomplices.' The two accounts differ regarding the number of soldiers involved in this rebellion.
