Wang Shuang was a general of Wei, skilled in using a large saber. During Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions, Wang Shuang led troops to confront the Shu army, successively killing Shu generals Xie Xiong and Gong Qi, and injuring Zhang Ni with a meteor hammer. Later, when fighting with Wei Yan, he was killed by Wei Yan.

The novel fictionalizes the scene of Wang Shuang being slain by Wei Yan, while the official history only records that he was defeated and killed by Zhuge Liang's army.

In Chapter 98 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the details of Wang Shuang being slain by Wei Yan are described: 'Wang Shuang was greatly alarmed, and before he could react, Wei Yan cut him down from his horse with a single stroke.' However, in the main text of the Biography of Zhuge Liang in the Records of the Three Kingdoms, it is only recorded that when Zhuge Liang retreated, 'Wei general Wang Shuang led cavalry to pursue Liang; Liang fought with him, defeated him, and beheaded Shuang,' without specifying that Wei Yan killed him. The novel specifically attributes the kill to Wei Yan to highlight his bravery.
