History vs. fiction
A powerful minister in history is transformed into a traitor collaborating with foreign enemies in a novel and is executed
- novel inventionThe treacherous minister Wang Qin colluded with the enemy and was executed by lingchi
In Chapter 43 of The Generals of the Yang Family, Wang Qinruo is renamed Wang Qin and depicted as a hidden traitor for the Khitan. After fleeing and being captured, Emperor Zhenzong orders him to be executed by lingchi: 'The executioner bound Wang Qin to a stake and slowly cut off his flesh. The spectators were all terrified. ... Wang Qin could not bear the pain, and after not even a few dozen cuts, his breath had already ceased.' In the official history, History of Song, Annals of Emperor Renzong I, although Wang Qinruo was later regarded as treacherous, he was deeply trusted by Emperor Zhenzong and Emperor Renzong, and ultimately died a natural death: 'On the first day of the eleventh month, the tea monopoly was abolished. ... On the day of Wushen, Wang Qinruo died.' The novel exaggerates his character and gives him a tragic ending of utter ruin.
