History vs. fiction
The annihilation of the Zhao clan by Tu'an Gu is recorded in the Records of the Grand Historian but not in the Zuo Commentary.

The Records of the Grand Historian, in the 'Hereditary House of Zhao', details how during the reign of Duke Jing of Jin, Tu'an Gu wielded power and exterminated the entire Zhao clan, while retainers Cheng Ying and Gongsun Chujiu risked their lives to hide the orphan Zhao Wu. The plot of 'Searching for the orphan and saving him' in Chapter 57 of the Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms is precisely based on this. However, the Zuo Commentary, in the eighth year of Duke Cheng, records that the Zhao clan's calamity actually arose from the slander of Zhuang Ji, and only Zhao Tong and Zhao Kuo were killed, and Zhao Wu never lived among the common people. The novel follows the Records of the Grand Historian, but the Records itself contradicts the Zuo Commentary.
