History vs. fiction
In official history, he was a Wu general known for his diligence and the white-clothed river crossing, but in the novel, he is depicted as dying after being possessed by Guan Yu's spirit.
According to the 'Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biography of Lü Meng', Pei Songzhi's annotation quotes the 'Jiang Biao Zhuan' that Sun Quan urged Lü Meng to study, and after Lu Su heard his discussions, he sighed, 'You are no longer the A Meng of Wu' and looked at him with new eyes.
The 'Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biography of Lü Meng' records that Lü Meng devised the plan of crossing the river in white clothes to attack Jingzhou's beacon towers, captured Nanjun, and eventually captured Guan Yu and his son.
The 'Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biography of Lü Meng' records that Lü Meng died of a sudden acute illness after taking Jingzhou, with no mention of any possession or apparition.
