History vs. fiction
The historical novel fictionalizes his son as Luo Cheng, adding legendary color.
The 'Old Book of Tang, Biography of Luo Yi' records his origins: 'Luo Yi, styled Ziyan, was originally a native of Xiangyang, and settled in Yunyang near the capital.' The 'Basic Annals of Gaozu' further records that after submitting to the Tang he was 'enfeoffed as Prince of Yanjun, the Youzhou commander Luo Yi, and granted the imperial surname Li.' The novel 'Romance of Sui and Tang' (chapter 065), however, invents his son Luo Cheng and related episodes: "Luo Cheng opened the dispatch and read it, then reported to Prince Luo Yi. Luo Yi said, 'Minzhou is far; the Turkic Khagan's lands are nearer.'"
