History vs. fiction
In the official history, Liu Wuzhou occupied Mayi and Fenyang, proclaimed himself Khan, and was later defeated by Li Shimin. The novel depicts his separatist rule and downfall based on facts.
The New Book of Tang, Annals of Emperor Taizong, records: "At that time, Liu Wuzhou occupied Bingzhou." Later, the Prince of Qin, Li Shimin, held firm at Baibi and defeated Song Jingang and Liu Wuzhou. In Romance of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Chapter 50, it is written that Li Yuan received a report: "Dingyang Khan Liu Wuzhou led troops to attack Bingzhou." The Prince of Qin, Li Shimin, was ordered to campaign against him. The historical facts that Liu Wuzhou, after his separatist rebellion against the Sui, fled to the Turks and was killed, are consistent with the official history.
