History vs. fiction
Rebel leader
- attestedScale of the uprising
In the novel, Fang La and Song Jiang are both listed among the Four Great Bandits; according to the "History of Song", Fang La's uprising affected six prefectures and fifty-two counties, shaking the southeast, and its actual momentum and scale far exceeded that of Song Jiang's band of dozens. The original text states: "宣和二年,方腊反,江、浙震动,调兵四方" (History of Song, Biography of Han Shizhong)
- based on factMystery of his death
The novel attributes the capture of Fang La to Wu Song or Lu Zhishen; however, the "History of Song: Biography of Han Shizhong" clearly records that after Fang La retreated to Qingxi Cave, he was captured alive by Han Shizhong's subordinate general. The original text states: "世忠穷追至睦州清溪峒,贼深据岩屋为三窟,诸将继至,莫知所入。" It also says: "格杀数十人,禽腊以出。" (from "History of Song: Biography of Han Shizhong")
