In official histories, he is the penultimate ruler of the Shang dynasty, while in novels, he inherits the title of Shang emperor and the plot of entrusting the throne.
The Records of the Grand Historian, Annals of Yin, records: 「帝乙长子曰微子启，启母贱，不得嗣。少子辛，辛母正后，辛为嗣。」 The account in the first chapter of Investiture of the Gods, regarding King Yi entrusting the throne to Zi Shou, is based on official history.
