In fiction · Journey to the West
Cui Jue, a deceased Tang official, now serves as a judge in the underworld and is a close friend of Wei Zheng. When Emperor Taizong's soul wandered in the underworld, Cui Jue summoned ghost messengers to drive away Li Jiancheng and Li Yuanji, and escorted the emperor back to life. Later, he altered the documents to add twenty years to the emperor's life.
History vs. fiction
Cui Pan official has no record as an underworld judge in official history.
In Chapter 010 of 'Journey to the West', Cui Jue is depicted as a judge in the underworld who privately adds twenty years to Emperor Taizong of Tang's lifespan. Although Cui Jue is a historical figure (an official in the early Tang Dynasty), the claim that he managed the register of life and death is purely a folk legend and fictional embellishment.
