In the official history, He Jin summoned Dong Zhuo to the capital and secretly instructed him to submit a memorial to pressure: "Jin then summoned Zhuo to bring troops to the capital, and secretly ordered him to submit a memorial saying: 'The eunuchs Zhang Rang and others have stolen favor and power, corrupting the realm. In the past, Zhao Yang raised the troops of Jinyang to expel the evil at the ruler's side. I now sound the drums and bells and go to Luoyang, to punish Rang and others.'" The novel rewrites it as Li Ru's suggestion: "Li Ru said: 'Although we have received the edict, there is much obscurity in it.
