Is “Whether there is a mythical plot of Panhu transforming into a dog” true?

The Records of the Grand Historian, Annals of the Five Emperors, records him as a sage ruler: 'Gaoxin was born with divine spirit, and spoke his own name. He universally bestowed benefits, not seeking them for himself.' But the novel adds the bizarre myth of transformation into a dog. In Search of the Supernatural, Volume 14, records: 'In the time of Gaoxin, there was an old woman who lived in the royal palace and suffered from an ear ailment. After some time, a doctor treated it and extracted a worm as large as a cocoon. The woman left, and placed it in a gourd, covering it with a plate. Soon the worm transformed into a dog with five-colored markings, hence named Panhu, and they raised it.' This is the novel's grafting.
