The 'Old Book of Tang, Biography of Chai Shao' records both his origins and his reputation as a knight-errant: 'Chai Shao, styled Sichang, was a native of Linfen in Jinzhou.' 'Shao was nimble and strong from a young age, and was known throughout Guanzhong for his chivalry.' The novel 'Romance of Sui and Tang' (chapter 024) turns that chivalry into outright greenwood bravado: "Chai Sichang clapped his hands and said, 'Then the two brothers need not worry -- Chai Sichang will take it all on himself!' Before everyone present, how dare Chai Sichang speak so boldly?"
