In the Battle of Yiling, the official history Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biography of Lu Xun records that Lu Xun used fire attack to break the camps, 'leading all forces to attack simultaneously, beheading Zhang Nan, Feng Xi, and the Hu king Shamoke among others.' However, in Chapter 84 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Nan, who had been besieging Yiling for a long time, upon hearing of Shu's defeat, 'led his troops to rescue the Lord.' During the retreat, he was caught between Sun Huan and Wu troops, attacked from front and back. He struggled to break through but could not escape, and ultimately 'died amidst the chaos of the army.'
