A native of Guangling, he was a chief strategist for Sun Ce and later a strategist for Sun Quan, reaching the position of Chief Clerk. He advised moving the capital to Moling. He served as Commandant of the Eastern Section of Kuaiji and corresponded with Kong Rong regarding Yu Fan.
In fiction · Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Zhang Hong was one of the Two Zhangs of Jiangdong. He was hired by Sun Ce as an advisor and sent on a mission to Xuchang, later serving as Commandant of Kuaiji. After Sun Quan succeeded, Zhang Hong became a guest and rose to Chief Clerk. Before the Battle of Red Cliffs, he advocated surrender. On his deathbed, he wrote a letter advising Sun Quan to move the capital to Moling.
