In fiction · Journey to the West
Yama is one of the Ten Kings of the Underworld, holding the Book of Life and Death and judging the cases of ghosts. When Sun Wukong caused havoc in the underworld, Yama reported to the Heavenly Court. When Emperor Taizong of Tang visited the underworld in spirit, the Ten Kings came out of the Senluo Hall to welcome him. When the true and false Monkey Kings caused trouble in the underworld, Yama checked the Book of Life and Death but could not distinguish them.
