History vs. fiction
Both official histories and the novel record that she was married to Liu Bei and was successively made Duchess of Hanzhong, Empress, and Empress Dowager.
The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Shu, Biographies of the Two Lords' Consorts and Sons records that Wu initially married Liu Mao and was later taken by Liu Bei, successively being established as Queen, Empress, and Empress Dowager; the novel's plot is entirely consistent with the official historical record. The original text states, “五月，立皇后吴氏，子禅为皇太子。”（《Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Shu, Biography of the Former Lord》）
