History vs. fiction
枢密使
- attested平定方腊
Water Margin downplays the achievements of the government army in suppressing the rebellion; according to the "History of Song: Biography of Tong Guan," Tong Guan, as the Pacification Commissioner of Jiangzhe, was actually the commander who led troops to quell the Fang La uprising. The original text states: "蔡京、童贯主之。" ("History of Song: Biography of Hou Meng")
- novel invention征讨梁山
The novel fictionalizes that Tong Guan led an army to campaign against Liangshan and returned in defeat. The "History of Song: Eunuch Biographies" records that Tong Guan held military power, provoked border conflicts, and was eventually executed, with no mention of a campaign against Song Jiang; the "Annals of Emperor Huizong" records that the one who suppressed and captured Song Jiang was Zhang Shuye, the prefect of Haizhou, not a high-ranking minister of the Privy Council level personally leading the expedition. The original text states: "Song Jiang rose from the north of the Yellow River, raiding ten commanderies in succession, and the government troops dared not confront his sharp edge." Afterward, "Jiang then surrendered." ("History of Song: Biography of Zhang Shuye")
