Patriarch Bodhi lived in seclusion on Mount Spirit Terrace and Square Inch, where he lectured on the Dao. Sun Wukong came to him, became his disciple, and was given the name 'Sun Wukong'. The Patriarch taught him magical arts, but later expelled him from the sect for showing off his transformations.

History vs. fiction
Patriarch Bodhi disappeared after the first two chapters of the novel
In chapters 001 and 002 of "Journey to the West", Patriarch Bodhi teaches Sun Wukong the way of longevity and the seventy-two transformations at Spirit Terrace Square Inch Mountain, but after expelling Sun Wukong from the sect, the book never mentions his whereabouts or gives any further account.
