In fiction · Journey to the West
The Deer Strength Immortal was a Daoist state preceptor in the Chechi Kingdom, who, along with Tiger Strength and Goat Strength Immortals, formed a brotherhood and deluded the king into persecuting monks. He participated in contests of magic, failing in the guessing game and the stomach-cutting duel, and was exposed and killed by Sun Wukong, revealing his true form as a white-haired horned deer. Originally the mount of the Star of Longevity, he descended to the mortal world as a spirit and once deluded the king into demanding children's hearts.
History vs. fiction
The spell of the Deer Strength Immortal to cut open his belly and gouge out his heart is a fictional invention of the novel.
In Chapter 46 of 'Journey to the West', it is written that the Great Immortal Deer Power competes with Tang Sanzang in a contest of cutting open the belly and scooping out the heart, and is later defeated and killed by Sun Wukong's magic, revealing his true form as a white-haired horned deer. Such deeds of demonic Taoists have no basis in classical texts; they are purely the vivid creations of the novelist.
