A close friend of Liu Bei, he followed Liu Bei into Shu. A native of Zhuo Commandery, he served Liu Bei and became General Zhaode.
In fiction · Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Jian Yong, a fellow townsman of Liu Bei, once went to the capital Xu to seek aid and defended Xuzhou. Later, he followed Liu Bei to Jingzhou, served as a strategist with the army, prepared for celebratory feasts, gave warnings through divination, and guarded Xiakou. He followed Zhuge Liang into Sichuan and entered the city to persuade Liu Zhang to surrender.

When Liu Bei surrounded Chengdu, Jian Yong entered the city as an envoy to persuade Liu Zhang to surrender.
When Liu Bei surrounded Chengdu, Jian Yong entered the city as an envoy to persuade Liu Zhang to surrender. The official history records that Jian Yong and Liu Zhang rode out of the city together in the same carriage to surrender. The novel completely retains this historical detail and adds a description of Jian Yong's arrogant demeanor in the city, acting as if no one else was present.
