Where the histories differ
The same Jia Yi is portrayed as a frustrated literatus in the Records of the Grand Historian, but as a statecraft advisor in the History of Han.
- histories differWhat is Jia Yi's standing in the official histories?
The Records of the Grand Historian places Jia Yi in the 'Biographies of Qu Yuan and Jia Yi' in the same chapter as Qu Yuan, focusing on his slander, exile to Changsha, and reading his rhapsodies, saying 'he treated life and death as the same, and lightly regarded going or staying, and was utterly at a loss.' The History of Han's 'Biography of Jia Yi' gives him a separate chapter, extensively recording his memorials, and says he 'understood the state's institutions, and even the ancients Yi Yin and Guan Zhong could not surpass him far.' On one side, he is a frustrated literatus; on the other, a proposer of Han dynasty institutions.
