Dapeng Diao was originally a Daoist from Penglai Island. During the Shang-Zhou period, he aided Shang against Zhou, and after revealing his true form, was subdued by the Lamp-Lighting Daoist. On the pilgrimage to fetch scriptures, he was one of the three demons of Shituo Cave, having eaten the king and people of Shituo Kingdom. He saw through the Monkey King's transformations, devised a plan to capture Tang Sanzang, and was ultimately subdued by Tathagata Buddha.
