In fiction · Journey to the West
Chen Guangrui, a newly crowned zhuangyuan, was appointed prefect of Jiangzhou. He was killed by the water bandit Liu Hong, but later revived by the Dragon King. He was the father of Xuanzang and held the title of Grand Scholar of the Wenyuan Hall.
History vs. fiction
The life story of Tang Seng's biological father is purely fictional.
In Chapter 009 of "Journey to the West", it is written that Chen Guangrui achieved the top scholar title, was appointed as the governor of Jiangzhou, and was killed by river bandits. However, according to official history and "The Biography of Master Sanzang of the Great Ci'en Temple", Xuanzang's father was named Chen Hui, who served as a county official in Jiangling County, and was not a top scholar who was murdered.
