History vs. fiction
Bai Yibing was a general of the Qin state, and in both books it is recorded that he participated in the Battle of Xiao and was captured by the Jin state.
The Records of the Grand Historian, Chapter on the House of Jin, records the great defeat of the Qin army: 'In the fourth month, [the Jin] defeated the Qin army at Xiao, and captured the three Qin generals Meng Mingshi, Xi Qi Shu, and Bai Yibing and returned.' The plot in Chapter 45 of the Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms is consistent with this: 'Meng Ming and the other two commanders, having no plan, gathered under the cliff and sat waiting to be bound. The Jin soldiers surrounded them from all sides... one by one they were captured without resistance.'
