A Shanhaijing Bestiary Lineage: Why One Name Can Have Many Bodies
Modern bestiaries often give each creature one fixed design and canonical profile. Classic of Mountains and Seas works differently: a name may carry different bodies in different chapters, while a being can be predator, medicine, omen, divine official or actor in war. Its 'lineage' is therefore first a network of textual variants and functions, not a tidy biological family tree.
The nine-tailed fox begins as a Green Hill beast, not another name for Daji
The Classic of the Southern Mountains places the nine-tailed fox inside the geography of Green Hill and records its body, cry, man-eating and medicinal consumption. Daji and palace possession are absent. Treating this beast as simply identical to the Daji of Investiture erases the later act of joining two separate texts and figures.
“有兽焉,其状如狐而九尾”

Yayu: one name, three bodies
The Classic of the Northern Mountains gives Yayu an ox-like body, red skin, a human face and horse feet. The Classic of Regions Within the Seas, South gives it a dragon head and wildcat-like form. Its western counterpart calls it snake-bodied and human-faced, then adds its murder and a scene in which shamans surround the corpse with immortality medicine. The differences belong to the texts; they are not database errors.
“有兽焉,其状如牛,而赤身、人面、马足,名曰窫窳,其音如婴儿,是食人。”
Classic of Mountains and Seas · Classic of the Northern Mountains: Mount Shaoxian“窫窳龙首,居弱水中,在狌狌一作“在狌狌知人名”之西,其状如䝙,龙首一作“龙首”,食人。”
Classic of Mountains and Seas · Classic of Regions Within the Seas, South“窫窳者,蛇身人面,贰负臣所杀也。”

A hybrid body may be a divine officeholder
At Kunlun, Luwu has a tiger body, nine tails, a human face and tiger claws, yet it is not a monster awaiting conquest: it administers nine divisions of heaven and the timing of the divine parks. The Queen Mother of the West similarly combines human form, leopard tail, tiger teeth and ritual headdress while governing calamities and punishments. A mixed body does not itself imply evil; office defines position in this textual cosmos.
“其神状虎身而九尾,人面而虎爪;是神也,司天之九部及帝之囿时”
Classic of Mountains and Seas · Classic of the Western Mountains: Kunlun“西王母其状如人,豹尾虎齿而善啸,蓬发戴胜”

Yinglong and Kui: creatures mediate war, drought, rain and power
The Great Wilderness, East places Yinglong directly in the war linking the Yellow Emperor, Chiyou and Kuafu; its inability to return above is then connected to southern rain and rainmaking during drought. In the same chapter, Kui appears as a one-legged ox-like being of storm and thunder whose hide and a thunder beast's bone become the Yellow Emperor's world-shaking drum. Creatures here are actors and media of environment and political force.
“应龙出一作“处”南极,杀蚩尤与夸父,不得复上。”

Lineage is not a final model: ox-like and winged Qiongqi, girl and bird Jingwei
The Classic of the Western Mountains describes Qiongqi as ox-like with hedgehog hair, while Regions Within the Seas, North gives it a tiger form and wings. The Jingwei entry links the drowning of the Flame Emperor's daughter Nüwa to a bird carrying wood and stones to fill the sea. A responsible lineage preserves chapter and variant instead of deciding one standard image on the ancient text's behalf.
“其状如牛,猬毛,名曰穷奇,音如獆狗,是食人”
Classic of Mountains and Seas · Classic of the Western Mountains: Mount Gui“穷奇状如虎,有翼,食人从首始”
Classic of Mountains and Seas · Classic of Regions Within the Seas, North“是炎帝之少女,名曰女娃,女娃游于东海,溺而不返,故为精卫,常衔西山之木石,以堙于东海。”
Classic of Mountains and Seas · Classic of the Northern Mountains: Mount Fajiu
A Shanhaijing lineage should not be flattened into a modern character bible. The dependable method is to keep name, chapter, body, action and office together: place variants side by side, mark transformations across books, and label artistic reconstruction as later imagination.
