The Records of the Grand Historian, in the 'Hereditary House of Wu Taibo', records the historical facts of King Zhufan's succession and 'Wu attacked Chu, and Chu defeated our army', and briefly notes 'In the thirteenth year, King Zhufan died', but does not mention the specific circumstances of his death in battle. In Chapter 65 of the Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, on the basis of historical facts, the novelist has elaborated, describing in detail his dramatic death process: 'attacking Chu, passing by Chao, and attacking its gate. The Chao general Niu Chen, hiding behind a low wall, shot him, and Zhufan died from the arrow.'
