In the official histories, Mao Gong and Xue Gong directly went to see Lord Xinling and advised him, as seen in Records of the Grand Historian, Biography of Lord Xinling: 'Mao Gong and Xue Gong went to see the Lord and said: 'The reason you are valued in Zhao and renowned among the feudal lords is solely because Wei exists.'' In the novel, however, a plot is added where Yan En, a retainer of Lord Xinling, first meets the two lords and tearfully pleads for help, and also adds a dialogue deliberately provoking Lord Xinling, as seen in Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, Chapter 102: 'It happened that Mao Gong, a gambler, and Xue Gong, a seller of drinks, came to visit the Lord. Yan En, knowing they were Lord Xinling's honored guests, tearfully told them of the matter. The two lords said: 'You just prepare the carriage; we two will do our best to persuade him.''
