In order to dramatize the rebellion of Meng Da and the Northern Expedition of Zhuge Liang, the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in Chapter 94, fabricates the plot that Xu Huang, as the vanguard of Sima Yi, suppressed Meng Da, and was shot by Meng Da "urgently drawing his bow and shooting, hitting Xu Huang right on the forehead... and he died that night." However, according to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Biographies of Zhang, Yue, Yu, and Zhang Xu, Xu Huang died of natural illness in the first year of the Taihe era of Emperor Ming of Wei ("died in the first year of Taihe"), and did not participate in the battle to pacify Meng Da's rebellion.
