Is “Proposed to divide troops and hold strategic points” true?

The official history 'Records of the Three Kingdoms' Wei Shu, Biographies of the Xiahou and Cao families does not detail the proposal to defend against Shu. However, in 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' Chapter 096, Cao Rui asks for advice, and Shangshu Sun Zi proposes: 'Better to use the current troops, divide and order the great generals to hold strategic points, conserve strength and sharpen the spirit,' suggesting to let Wu and Shu fight each other.
