In the novel, Shi Jin is a young and robust hero with tattoos all over his body; some historical perspectives suggest that his prototype may be the anti-Jin general Shi Bin mentioned in historical materials such as the "Xu Zizhi Tongjian Changbian". The original text reads: "又请高手匠人与他刺了这身花绣，肩臂胸膛总有九条龙，满县人口顺，都叫他做‘九纹龙’史进。" ("Water Margin", Chapter 002).
